How would you describe your style as a teenager?

I graduated high school in 1969. As far as fashion goes, some of you may remember the 60s as the era of the miniskirt. I used to sew some of my own clothing, and a miniskirt ( or hot pants ) took one yard of fabric. ( minidresses, not much more!) Add a top, a pair of tall boots, and my friends and I were ready to go. Can’t get any more affordable than that! We threw in the occasional maxi as well. It was all about the extremes back then!

How would you describe your style now?

Now, my fashion choices are mostly dresses that are easy, comfortable and basically unstructured. After retiring from a career in teaching, I still prefer simple t-shirt, A line, and boxy dress styles in natural fabrics. I’m not artistic at all when it comes to putting together an outfit, so I stick with easy, throw on and go choices. Black is my favorite dress color choice, and I have bought many Alembika dresses to get me through the seasons. I prefer mid-calf length, elbow or 3/4 sleeves, and, of course, pockets!

What’s one piece of clothing you can’t live without?

This one is easy! I can’t live without my Copenhagen dress!! I’ve worn it ( I bought more than one) everywhere from a funeral to out for pizza. It’s that versatile! I’m hoping it comes out in more colors…I’ll buy them all! I’ll wear it with booties this fall and winter after sandals this past spring and summer.

What would you do with a whole day for yourself?

At 73 years old, I DO have days to myself! I love to read, spend time with friends and family, and cook one-pot meals. My husband says my pasta sauces are better than most restaurants we visit! We live in a large, 100 year old Tudor Colonial that always needs something done, so that keeps us busy as well.

Who gave you the most valuable piece of advice and what was it?

I guess a valuable piece of advice that I can remember came from my father. He was a gifted musician and teacher who worked with kids of all ages. He inspired me to become a teacher and told me to always follow the Golden Rule. Respect, kindness, empathy, forgiveness….we need these now more than ever. I had it posted in all my classrooms throughout the years and hopefully inspired students to carry it with them in their hearts throughout their lives.
